What changes in the file when you convert JPG to PNG

We converted a picture of a fabric softener pouch made with GenLabs (a 1086 × 1448 pixel JPG) and looked at the file that came back (tested 30 September 2026).

WhatThe JPG you put inThe PNG you get
File size347 KB2.83 MB (8.4 times bigger)

Colour of each pixeloriginalsame as the JPG pixel for pixel
Transparent backgroundnonenone (a full-colour file with no transparency layer)
  • The picture is not sharper: the PNG matches the JPG pixel for pixel. Converting to PNG adds no detail. It only makes the file bigger.
  • The file grows with the picture: a test JPG the size of a phone photo, 4032 × 3024 pixels (12.2 million pixels, built by our program), went from 1.82 MB to a 22.18 MB PNG.
  • The background is not removed: to get a PNG with a transparent background, remove the background first with the background remover (https://genlabs.in.th/en/tools/background-remover). In our test a bottle photo cut out with that tool came back as a PNG where 82.8% of the pixels were fully transparent.
  • A portrait phone picture comes out upright: a JPG that stores a rotation value (as portrait phone photos can) gave an upright PNG, the way it looks when you open it on the phone. Our 4032 × 3024 test file (built by us, not from a real phone) stores the picture sideways with a rotation value and gave a 3024 × 4032 upright PNG at full size. Location and camera model did not carry over.

What this tool does not do

  • It does not take a file over 10 MB, a picture over 50 million pixels (width times height), or a picture with a side longer than 10,000 pixels: in our test a 4032 × 3024 JPG (12.2 million pixels) and an 8064 × 6048 JPG (48.8 million) converted at full size, and an 8000 × 7000 JPG (56 million) was refused with the message "This file is too large or can't be opened. Try a JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC up to 10 MB." A refused file does not use up one of your 5 free conversions.
  • It does not remove a background: use the background remover (link above).
  • It converts one file at a time. The file is uploaded to GenLabs' server to be converted; it is not converted in your browser. GenLabs does not store the result; it goes straight to your browser.

Your PNG is ready. Next, make the product photo help you sell.

If the file you converted is a product photo, send it to GenLabs and pick a direction. GenLabs writes the prompts and makes the ad images: a set in 2 minutes, and you write no prompts yourself. See what GenLabs does on the product page: https://genlabs.in.th/en/product

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the background be transparent when I convert JPG to PNG?

No. In our test the PNG was a full-colour file with no transparency layer, and it matched the JPG pixel for pixel. A JPG has no transparent areas to begin with, so changing the file type does not remove the background. To get a PNG with a transparent background, run the GenLabs background remover first (a free tool, no sign-up): https://genlabs.in.th/en/tools/background-remover

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the JPG, and can I upload it to a shop?

In our test a 347 KB JPG gave a 2.83 MB PNG, 8.4 times bigger, because the PNG keeps every pixel as it is. Shopee states product images as JPEG, JPG or PNG up to 2 MB (read on 29 September 2026; the source is in the table on the image converter page: https://genlabs.in.th/en/tools/image-converter), so this PNG is over the limit. To upload to a shop, use the original JPG, or make the file smaller with the image compressor: https://genlabs.in.th/en/tools/image-compressor

Will a portrait phone JPG come out upright as a PNG, and does the place it was taken travel with it?

Upright. In our test a JPG that stores the picture sideways with a rotation value (4032 × 3024) gave a 3024 × 4032 upright PNG at full size, pixel for pixel the same as the upright JPG, with no location and no camera model in the PNG. Our program built the test file; it is not from a real phone. It held a camera make and a location we put in ourselves.

Can I convert a 12 or 48 megapixel phone picture to PNG, and how big can it be?

Yes. In our test a 4032 × 3024 JPG (12.2 million pixels) gave a 22.18 MB PNG and an 8064 × 6048 JPG (48.8 million pixels) gave a 46.25 MB PNG, both at full size. The limits are files up to 10 MB, and pictures up to 50 million pixels (width times height) with no side longer than 10,000 pixels. Anything over that shows the message "This file is too large or can't be opened. Try a JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC up to 10 MB." A refused file does not use up one of your 5 free conversions. Our program built the test files; the PNG of a real photo will be a different size.
